I completed my undergraduate degree and PhD in Psychology at the University of Leeds and then spent a number of years working in academia and industry as a psychologist, including a stint at BBC TV Centre in London. I have always been interested in understanding how psychological theory can be applied to problems with mental health. Wanting to help people in a more practical way, I went back to university to train as a Clinical Psychologist, specialising in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
After qualifying, I worked in the NHS in secondary care mental health services in Swindon. Here I helped people with severe and enduring mental health problems using CBT. I also worked in an NHS mental health rehabilitation ward in Swindon with people who have long term problems with their mental health. Working with staff on the ward helped them gain a deeper psychological understanding of the problems their patients faced.
I continue to work for the NHS, teach trainee clinical psychologists at the University of Oxford, and have a small private practice. I mainly see clients online but have rooms to see clients in person in Chippenham, Wiltshire.
